When To Choose One-on-One Dog Training Sessions
Do you want a deep and lasting relationship with your dog that makes you both happy?
Do you want to learn how to train your dog to:
- Leave it/Drop it
- Pay Attention/Watch me
- Walk nicely/Stay with me
- Politely approach people, dogs, and other animals
…without yelling, correcting, getting mad or frustrated?
I offer one-on-one training sessions at your home, where you and your dog are most relaxed, least distracted, and most able to focus. Each lesson is geared to what you want and need to learn. I provide you with exercises and activities to bring along behaviours that are important to you and your family. We meet as frequently or infrequently as you need and we can shift the time and day to accommodate your schedule, and you can have family members join us, all without changing the cost. You can have a dog that comes every time you call it, a dog that will leave or drop things when asked to, a dog that will pay attention to you even when there are distractions, a dog that will walk nicely on leash and wait calmly while you chat or do something, and politely approaches people, dogs and other animals. It’s not magic, it’s training.

One hour with Shira is so empowering. It opened my eyes to see life as my dog does. With the wisdom she shared, I feel like I have a new dog ( but really, it is a new me! )” ~ Theresa Stone

What’s NOT on offer are group dog training classes and here’s why:
Classes are like trying to hold an AA meeting in a bar! There are too many distractions for both people and pups. All the new sights, smells, and sounds results in a dog that simply can’t concentrate; he is over aroused and over stimulated, and spends all the class time practicing the behaviours that most aggravate you, his human partner. In turn, you get stressed and frustrated by your dog’s unruly behaviour and you are soon equally overwhelmed. The result is that you don’t remember more than a few minutes of the instructor’s carefully prepared lesson and so, in spite of your best intentions, you don’t practice much during the week.
In my opinion, classes are generally not a good return on your investment of time and money. It’s best to wait to take classes until your dog is able to focus on you, even when distracted, and has acquired some impulse control. Basics first, then classes to enhance training and acquire skills.
